You can use small wire oncaves but you will end up with more cracked and splits and if this is considered dockage it will cost you. A 40 bushel an acre crop will also cost you some rotor loss because the seeds won't get seperated from the residue and end up going out the back. I guess it is a judgement call if you have several hundred acres it may make sense to buy wide wire concaves. However if you have only a small amount you could use your small wire concaves.
