here in europe we use only the largewire concave for the sts. we harvest with the large wire concave wheat-sunflowers-canola-and also corn some do soybeans. the only thing where you could have problems with the large wire is when you have really dry wheat or barley, you could have a too big shoe load and problems with looses and grainquality also allways overloaded tailings. my opinion for your contitions in the us would be the small wire and for the fall harvest the roundbar concave. i made good expe. on my trip trou the us in a combinecrew with smallwire and roundbar concave and also in eastcanada.

If you combine a lot of wheat (especially HRS wheat that threshes hard),you will want to use the small grain concaves. The round bar concaves will work for soybeans, corn, sunflowers etc. in the fall.

We,have run sts combines since 1999 your best bet is small wire for wheat with a cover plate over the middle of the second concave if your wheat is hard threshing add 1 or 2 covers in the front of the first concave.Round bar will work for all your fall work, just add concave inserts in the first concave for milo.If you havent bought the combine all ready ask your dealer about the custom cutter package, comes with both sets concaves and all inserts.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. After reading the posts and talking to many different people, I realize that I don't need to buy the set of large wire concaves for milo. I can use a combination of the small wire and round bar for both corn and milo. One other question. What does everyone think about the "extra wear" packages that JD offers. Sorry if that has been previously discussed.
