M2 will handle 630 in you condiditon fine. Make sure it has HD feeder beater with metal guides -9_16" fingers. lower raddle needs to be tight and in good shape - it is out of regular line of site so don't overlook it. Rest of the items are just regular check for wear and tear. Simple basic machine.

how many hours are on the machine and what dealer is it atIJ you should be able to go a bit faster with an m2 with a 6 row than a 550 massey with a 4 row. it's an overall bigger machine .Is it a regular m2 or corn plus or corn_soybean specialIJ

This M2 is a 1977 with 2846 hrs on it. It's been at our local John Deere dealership for almost a year. I'm not sure if it's a regular or corn_soybean special. I'm leaning towards a regular because it comes with a 15 ft rigid head. In an 8-10 hr day we are able to combine 25-30 arces of corn with the Massey 550, provided everything works. Would you know any specs on the M2 or guide me somewhere on the web for specsIJ Thanks.

There were 2 M-2's,long shoe and short shoe,if its a 77 its got the short shoe, about 6" shorter than the long.Is it gear drive or hydro.Gear drives had a zerk tapped into variable speed sheave, really helped.Probably got a 130 hp 301.I 've had both long and short shoe machines, both can be set to work well.At 2800 hrs the machine has lots of life left if maintained.Obvious would be to check cylinder bars concave, raddle chains, and straw walkers. Also check striker plates on rock door to see if the door was run loose,it wears the rod that holds the door.Check the swivel on the unloading tube to see if the ball bearings are worn.Could combine 35-50 acres per day.

I did the same thing, went from a 550 to a M then a M2. M2 is definitely easier to work on. That seperator clutch on the 550 behind the cab is really a bugger. The 550 was underpowered but not the M2. It does burn a little more fuel. I do like the unloading auger on the 550 better but since I replaced the unloading collar it is not so bad. If that M2 is a rasp bar make sure it has the Trimpe bars in it. They will make it stroll through the field.
