Combines Corn cobs in engine compartment

I dont recall any corncobs getting into the engine compartment of my R60. Do you have the full rubber shield in place that goes from the ladder to the lH side of the combineIJ I have one but I have seen many R60s without it. I dont know if the rubber shield would keep cobs out of the engine compartment but it sure keeps cobs from flying onto the chaffer. Are you sure you dont have an opening in the processor areaIJ I have seen machines with the accelerator roll inspection shield on the lH side missing. But cobs shouldnt get onto the accelerator rolls.

We used to have same trouble with spreader belts and cobs on our R-60. Noticed when comparing our R-60 to others that we did not have top or bottom shields around idlers. Agco wanted a lot for the shields so we just made our own-we used plywood.

Brian, where are your cobs coming fromIJ Its been a full year since I did any corn and I dont think I am losing my memory, but I dont recall seeing any cobs in the engine compartmentnone in the R60. How in the world can 2 guys be having so much trouble and one doesnt have anyIJ What am I doing differentlyIJ Is it the full rubber shield around the spreadersIJ Have you done any corn this yearIJ We finished soys on Wednesday and decided to take a few days off and let Mother Nature dry corn.

Tom, I believe based on the photos of your combine on this site you have a shield on the top of your spreader belts...many R-60-70's have them, ours didn't. It looks like it 'flips' down via piano hinge to get at belts. Without that shield and one on the bottom side of those belts we couldn't go two days without breaking the spreader belt. Do you have a shield on the bottom sideIJ We finially noticed an R-60 on the dealers lot that had this shield and soon figured out why our belts were always jumping off. Everytime I see an R60_70 I look to see if it has that shield...some do some don't. I have no idea why. Ours didn't have rubber flap either when we got it, but we installed soon after getting. However this alone was not enough. Since making our own shields we havn't replaced a belt in years! Just started corn the other day. Have a few acres of beans left that are not fit. Can't believe how good the corn is!!! Have a good and safe harvest. One of these days I'm going to ask you a few questions about your R-60 performance. Brian

Brian, sorry I didnt see your reply until today. My R60 didnt have all shields when I bought it 7 years ago so I ordered them from Parts. I assume the former owner removed them for some reason as lots of other guys do. We got a heavy rain yesterday morning as I was putting the R60 back in the shop. Now I have a wet combine to work on.
