Combines Corn vs snow

i saw a combine running beans late this morning and it was snowing. couldn't believe it. Duane

Duane, someone made the comment some time ago that if it was below 20 degres, the snow wouldn't give any trouble such as packing, plugging, etc. Must be so, 'cause some were still picking around here the other day @ 5-10 degrees. looking at the forcast tonight, it looks like some of you in Ohio will get a chance to test that theory! If temperature is about 14 Farenheit and under, snow kinda crystalizes like sugar and will blow through combine perfectly. Been doing corn and beans in the snow the last 3 years in Ontario here because of weather and acreage issues. Any warmer then that, snow will start to build up on right side of concave and eventually cover it up, also air jet chaffer will start to plug and you will carry over on shaker shoe. last year we did 250 acres in mid January when corn was flat in 6-10 inches of snow and day time temperatures only went to -4 Farenheit and never had any problems at all. So much snow going threw that we had to take right chaff spinner off the back of the combine because the rotary screen was plugging with all the snow being blown out. Not really something you want to try just for somethng to do.

Did this with canola swaths this year and also in 2002. We were pickin up 30` useing a 9600. It works better if it gets really cold rather than just barely freezing. If it`s about -20C any snow goes out like chaff. But if it`s only 0C (32F)it tends to gumm up your sieves. not fun.

My corn has been done but Im doing 30 acres for my neighbor. We got so much snow that Im still not doing it. Its standing about 14 inches in the field and its a little frozen in the middle due to freezing rain and its pretty heavy wet snow. The ears are hanging about an inch or so above the snow. And now its all starting to melt so it would be a big wet muddy mess.
