Combines cornhead knives 1083

We changed ours a couple of years ago on our 1083. I believe we change each set from one side to the other and in doing this the knives were flipped front to back. I think that if you look at the knife, most of the wear is toward the front. When you turn them you will find that you will be able to shim the front up to 1_32IJ of an inch. It works as good as new.

I tried this one year and did not have much luck. The head will be very aggresive again but when you pick in tough conditions you will get plugging at the back of the knives. Then you will wish you spent the money on new knives, just my 2 cents. P.S. I had an old set of knives laying around last year and I ended up cutting the top third of the knife off and welding the rear of the old knife to make a "almost" new knife. I just finished doing 1100 acres with my 1063 and I didnt have one fail on me. Now its time to tear it apart again and spring for new ones.

You might be right. In tough conditions where to much gap is left at the back, I can see where this could cause a problem. If you try this you'll want to check gap at back to see how wide it is on one row before you change the whole head.
