Combines Cornhead knives

I flopped all the knives on our 1083 before this years harvest and it worked out fine. They go from the left roll to the right and right to the left. It is a long boring job though. I took all the rolls off when I did it and replaced all the roller beaings in the front end. If you take them off number them and keep track of how many shims each one has, as it will speed up setting the clearance's on reassembly. Jake

Hey, Pay attn to how you take the knives off. If you get the blades on upside down it makes for a very very bad day the first day you go shell next fall it will cut the cornstalk off and then it just floats in the head. learned this the hard way just trying to make sure nobody elese has to.

So, that I understand correctly, make sure the top of the knife is still the top, just on the opposite roll end for endIJ I am pretty sure I understand THanks for the hint.

One time on the 900 series corn head I bought a half set of new knives and installed them. Reason was, all knives were worn enough that they were slotted out on adjustment and wouldn't come together close enough, yet still had wear surface left. I flipped the knives end for end and side for side, alternating a new and a used knife as I went so I could get my running clearance back. Now all I ever need is a half of a set to buy the next time. Same amount of time, half the money.

I purchased a 22" CH 6 years ago and the salesman told me when I noticed that the knives were in wrong, he told me that the previous owner said that he was getting more stalk into the combine. So I had to turn all of the knives bevel edge down. Make senseIJ Jack Now my question. If anyone on here has changed knives, have you ever raised the head up in the front to make the replacement easierIJ Thanks.

When I work on stalk rolls I sit the head on it's back. If you have a big enough loader with pallet forks tip forks down and lay them agaist back of head where feeder house would hook. Chain head fast to forks and just lift and tip straight up. Head will sit on back edge of end sheets. Make sure your dividers are latched before you tip it. Makes it MUCH nicer to work on.
