Combines Cornheads orange vs black

There are several incarnations of the orange heads. Early ones had one piece spirals on the roll tips. Intermediate ones had a spiral tip, staight cast section and then steel flutes. Both early styles used steel detachable gathering chains. late orange heads used roller gathering chains which was much better. A late model orange head in good working order will take the crop out just as well as a black one. The black heads had improved durability, more spiraling on the rolls (late orange heads can be upgraded) and used less long roller chains under the head. Probably not many long roller chains on a 330 though. If you're interested in a black 330 head a fellow at Waukon, Iowa had one earlier this fall. He also had a black 238. Both were on a K2.

A black head is a better unit than the orange. I have had both and do not care for the orange ones at all. I am still running a K2 diesel pushing a 4-38" black head. It works fine up to 27-28% moisture and 150 bu_acre. A 3-30" head on a K2 would be a cruise in the park.
