We use them on wide gap (sometimes wide wire means small gap) in wheat to thresh properly. With the keystock you might be ok. Try it without them on and if you can't thrash properly put them in. We use up to 3 if the wheat is not thrashing properly. We run our rotors at about 1050 rpm empty for wheat. I haven't done oats for a couple years but I'm sure there were no plates.
