the new gleaners have them to, ours are not self grounding and i have found that the ground strap to be very tempermental and makes it seem like the alternator is bad. we have had good luck w_ them other then that

For the 8010's on the next (2006) update they will be checking alternators and if required replacing them. There were apparently some issues with certain 2005 models (bad batch from supplier maybe, not sure). CNH has not made the final details of the updates for 2006 available to the dealers yet as far as when they will be done.

You are correct the 05 model years did have an internal diode soldered incorrectly by the supplier. They will be checked on the mod and replaced if need be, but most didn't make it that long. Experience with these alternators has been good until the 05 model years. One other important thing is not to run the machine after the alt. has failed or throws an error code, it could possibly casue an engine controller failure. Hope this helps.

You know I would not trust CNH to get you the most for your hard earned dollar. Heck they can not even keep the same address or lap for their oil sampling program (System guard). As I stated earlier leece-Neville has and I am sure is capable of building a good Alt. My 70 year old alt_starter repair man sent me away puzzled on a starter the other day, Solenoid was bad, leece-Neville, Prestolite in the old day, Part n77510, Said starter would not be worth fixing, I found an outfit handling tons of alt_starter parts this particular solenoid new from them 3 on hand $36.95, Napa shows them on internet for $144 rebuilt $12 core. Most places want at least $130 for this 12V solenoid pretty rediculous price desperity these days. But I sure can't fault my ole Starter_AlT repair man's judgement either, just he would be lost on a computer just like I would be lost on a starter_alt if it took much. All else fails look on ebay, might be a whole one their, quite a few alt_starter parts their also, I will even clue you in their is a site on the internet that gives the build parts, enter the alt_starter tag number and bingo out pops out the parts number and cross numbers. I guarantee the parts will not be that different in quality just mere price. I wish I could profit from your delima's as much as CNH has.

I know of a guy with a CR 970 went through 3 altenators in 600 engine hours the altenator problem was just one of many he had with the CR He always got them replaced under warranty. So if I were you Michael I would go back to my dealer and walk in the door and start with the partsmen and if they can't help you just keep going up the chain of command and if no one in the store will help you out. Then find out who the territory rep is and then start getting mean there is no way you should be paying for these altenators CNH knows they are a POS and they should replace it. All new parts from CIH have a 6 month warranty on them and if you bought this altenator last fall and the combine has been parked in storage for the last 5 months that sure the f**k would not be part of the 6 month warranty in my books just keep complaining they will come across. If your dealer has any balls he will go to bat for you if he doesn't next time you know what to tell them when they want to sell you another piece of equipment. Any idiot can sell but it takes an excellent dealer with great people to supply parts and service your equipment. Good luck and don't take no for an answer.

What would happen if CNH didn't make a profit on partsIJ Oh yeah, they would close up shop and we would be really screwed then.

Yes, I agree CNH needs and has to make a profit on parts. But when you see the old generation makin a decent happy style of living off of repairing small items...starters, alternators, small engines, propane stuff. You know there is a hell of a mark up, and desire to change stuff just for the sake of change. Mainly so people can not find it, and have to get it OEM you know there is a problem. I know I personally stock close to a dozen alternators... from Niehoff brushless 1480, Many a delco both small and large frame...3 voltage levels, swing arm brushes, one wire, engergized by ign, 3large frame delco, a large frame bosch like on combines, 2-3 Nippondenso (JD),Even have a large frame leece-Neville on hand. And I bet I do not have a $1006 in all of these. One of my large frame Delco came out of a dumpster at one of my unit train grain delivery sites. Please be stupid and stick some more in the dumpsters, I always enjoy a good find. Heck the other Day I seen a whole 55 gal barrel full of no doubt dead alternators. Heck I was even so lucky to find a Ford Powerstroke alt from a guy for $10, Naturally took it to my repair man, was in excellent shape, not a thing wrong. You guys are crazy if you think CNH is the only place that can rebuild their current production alternators. Heck in your case probably only need to stock one version, One-wire, I'd ask rotation so as to know whether or not have correct fan to cool. (This could be this gentleman's problem) Bet your running maintance free batteries so I know what voltage level to choose if I liked you, and bingo, long as know how to disable the idiot light and buzzer you would be good to go, just remember to unhook in the off season so your self-exciting one wire does not slowly drain your batteries, a one wire does pull a few milli-amps, just like a clock. Think of it this way with-out tearing them down, how do you know what is killing them, if there was a way to improve a selection for you app. Is the diod-trio a problem, are the bearing failing, Is the stator flying apart, what is going on that they are junk. Only way to know is to have some good ole boy diagnose and test, bet you can not ask your parts man to let you know what parts it needed. Vibration, heat, dirt, chaff, all play a part, something needs fixed. May have to put a venturi aspirator on the alternator, just like you have on your air cleaner. Just go plug that baby off and see how long your air cleaner will go w_o plugging off.
