Combines crapped 2nd gear in 2188 again

I have had to replace 2nd gear in two out of three 1680's several years ago. I'm not sure what caused the gear failures. I tried to impress on my operators to be sure the combine was on level ground, with the hydrostatic control set so there was no torque on the transmission, while selecting gears. It is my belief that there is great risk of breaking teeth if grinding occurs during gear shifting.

it just peels the teeth off like you put it in a lathe. it looks like to me that the shifter detent is not engaging all the way or something to that effect it takes the teeth of of half the gear (The thickness of the gear) all the way around it and then all the crap and metal shaving go right thru first and third! I'm just wondering if there was not a bullitin or update on this I ahve the only 2188 for miles around and have some hard times getting anything found out on it not to say I have a bad dealer they just don't have alot of time with the 21-2300's oh well only ten months till next harvest huh. Will

Three words-lINKAGE, lINKAGE, lINKAGE! If the linkage is out of adjustment, 2nd gear usually suffers. Think about it-1st and 3rd are on the same "throw" of the shifter, all you are doing by lifting the "trigger" on the gearshift to get first is to engage the other shift rail. My first thought is this-remove the top lid of the tranny BEFORE you remove the transmission and check the travel of the shift rails. Adjust the linkage until 2nd gear is in FUll engagement between the gear teeth. Now remove the tranny and fix 2nd gear. You can remove the linkage without messing up your adjustment. Good luck.

Wow sounds like your dealers mechanic does not know how to set the linkages. We had a mechanic at our dealership that i work at do a trany for the first time and he did not no what he was doing and he set the linkage wrong and guess what see you back in a couple days. PS i would talk to your dealership or who ever did the work the first time because he should of found the problem or fixed it right the first time.

Talked to the case people on this one on oneof my machines. Seems that the linkage is very important. Especially on a new set of gears. Mine kept jumping out of second gear when I pulled a hill. They said it was very important that the linkages were adjusted right or the gears would edgeload and fail or if there was enough contact to hold they would wear into each other, quickly, and you would never get them to stay in gear. Detented or not.
