Combines Crop Insurance

The major peril we have is hail. And since hail insurance is the only type of insurance that covers hail losses adequately, we buy it at the maximum level our goofy state will allow. If we have to buy fed govt insurance, we will buy whatever the minimum is.

I have been at the 75% level with RA the last several years. This year I'll probably stay the same. RA paid very well compared to CRC last fall with the run up in prices. CRC got capped some 40 cents under RA. I may consider going to the 70% level. When talking with my agent last week it looked like we were only buying $3.00 of coverage for every $1.00 worth of premium. Not a very good return. Plus, we will have by far, more coverage per acre this year with a 70% level than we have in the past with higher levels.

I'm going with 70% RA on corn and 75% RA on soybeans. I checked on the RA price this morning and it is set at $4.06 for corn and $8.09 for soybeans. RA corn looks awfully good on the pivot that has a 190 bushel proven yield.
