Combines Cummins vs Duramax vs Powerstroke

It also helps Ford's numbers when they offer free diesel upgrades to their heavy duty pickups every now and then. That's why many buy Ford. Doesn't mean they are any better than the rest. A slogan is a slogan, who made it up anywayIJ Bet it was Ford. I personally have a '99 3500 Dodge with a Cummins. 90000 miles and not one single engine problem yet. I have a new transmission though. That's where the Chevy and GMCs are strong. You cannot beat an Allison automatic transmission. If only Dodge would team the Allison with the Cummins. Marc

I agree, Dodge needs to offer an auto trans besides there own. You have a 60,000 gvw rated motor mated to a gasoline rated tranny. The first 5-speed they had G-trag (which Ford Used) could not stand up in a Dodge. The second NV-4500 (which GM used also)could not stand up in a Dodge. Thus the birth of the 6-speed NV-5600, at 428 pounds nearly twice the weight of the other two five speeds. The moral here, took them 10 years to come up with a manual tranny that would take it. Might take 10 more on the auto unless they go out and buy into something, but they would never cross the line into something GM or Ford use. looks like I'll be jammin gears for a while................

Not sure if it is true but was told that the Dodge people were working with Allison on that transmission when GM decided to buy the Isuzu engine and call it a Duramax.Since GM owns part of Allison they wouldn't let Dodge use it then. That is why the trans was ready at the same time the engine was.I have a hard time believing a diesel will hold up with aluminum heads. For the price difference between the diesel and gas engine I will stick with gas.Still get between 150,000 and 180,000 miles out of them and can rebuild them for the cost of just the diesel injection pump and injectors.

Cummins beats all! I have a 1989 Dodge with a Cummins and a five speed and have 250,000 miles and haven't had any major problems except had to replace an injection pump once. Put a 4" exahust system from a 94-up on, had to do a little modification where the turbo bolts up. now it hauls ass!! we pull a 24 ft steel stock trailer and it will beat anything up to the mid 90s. and about the automatic tranny on the dodges, whats the pointIJ if its a diesel its needs a manual. if you cant shift gears you dont need a diesel.

I have an automatic because I do a lot of city driving. I pull a 40 foot 4 horse gooseneck trailer or a fertilizer spreader or ammonia tank often on the farm, but the auto made more sense. I have an FlD 120 Freightliner too, so I think I'm pretty good with gears also. One of the best tandems I have driven had an Allison in it. Only truck I knew that you could shift from reverse to forward with the gas pedal down all day long and it would hold up without a problem. I used to do the Texas to Kansas silage harvest, so automatics were the best in the fields.

boss has a 94 chevy duramax 3_4 ton chipped, gobs of power, allison tranny, still have to push button for tow haul, if you pull anything heavy push it twice beast has a ton of power but not good on fuel about 11 gallons a mile if she pulls hard, sure fun to drive
