Combines cyl gear

A couple things come to mind. I have seen the gear box get hot and the detent spring lost tension. It could be some thing else wrong with the detent. It could be a problem with the shift collar.......they just dont give much problem, it isnt some thing we shift on the go. if there was a problem with a shaft and or bearing that caused the shift fork to be out of place that would also cause some thing like this. Does it feel like it shifts firmly into the detentIJ Have you watched what happens on the side of the machine when you engage itIJ Maybe you can pickup on a clue by watching it. Not sure this helped you but good luck. VSTK

our neighbor had this same thing on an n6. they put a rubber bungee strap like is used on truck tarps to put pressure on the shift lever and never did have to do anything else. might be a little risky for your gearbox thou.

Make sure output shaft isn't getting loose. Very likely interlocking coupling has got wore enough to allow it to pop out upon startup. You best pull cylinder sometime to check shaft endplay and very likely you will need to go in and replace coupling and the collar it slides on. Wouldn't hurt to drain oil to check for junk in case bearing is failing. If no sign of something failing you could tie gear shift to hold when engaging until you can lay up machine for awhile. Don't preload shifter much if you use some sort of tarp strap. Good luck

I mean just just tie lever in the spot where it is engaged. Just wouldn't want you to tie lever over with to much continuous pressure. You would end up wearing the fork out if tied over tightly. Not a bad idea to change and check condition of oil especially when you know it was just changed lately and you are now having a problem. Good luck
