tbeck, I understand your frustration. I know of a very similar story that happened to a friend of mine. He purchased an R70 at a sale(spring2008) and got a good deal on it, with many new parts shoe, belt, cyl.bars, helical bars, etc. Everything on the engine looked good, except 1 jug that was leaking. So being a Deutz with no one around area familar with them, he decided to have a dealer fix the problem by putting on new jug. My friend delivered combine to dealer 6 wks prior to the 2008 wheat harvest for this repair. Time went on, and Joe checked on the progress of the combine at dealer every other day. Joe and his dad were planning on custom cutting so hauling to local Gleaner dealer being 150 miles away was no big deal. Harvest arrived with custom cutters arriving, and farmers getting excited to get crop out. Joe and his dad brought their other machine an R-62. Then,Joes dad and a hired man started harvesting. Meanhwhile Joe worked on R70 and fixed jug himself as dealer was way tooo busy with many customers. Dealer then recommended that Joe replace cooling fan. So Joe fixed this also, even though he had never been around Deutz air diesel, with some help or advice from mechanic on assembly_disassembly of fan. Finally approx. 2ks into harvest the R70 fired up but sprung oil leak, around fan . Joe had already spend several $thousand at dealer along with some backordering of parts delays and was fed up with dealer. So Joe ended up taking combine to another ( local dealer 150 miles in another area way far from the wheat trail). This dealer promptly fixed fan oil leak, after 1st try failed so another delay of 7days. By then the wheat harvest was well into Kansas, as was Joes Dad and their hired man on their 4th harvesting stop, since Texas. Joe was able to join his dad, and hired man as 2nd Gleaner dealer had 2 mechanincs able to work on combine. Finally the big day arrived for R70 in some 80 bushel Kansas wheat. Joe cut approx. 30 acres then jug that had been replaced locked engine down. Frustrated and stressed with all of this Joe hauled combine back home, and the morale with his father and hired man were down. They finished harvesting for this particular Kansas farmer, then decided not to go north any further. Summary, R70 worked exceptionally well for the short time it ran. Joe was very impressed with how much more throughtput it had than R62, with cummins. Joe located another R70 with near new Deutz engine with help from 2nd Gleaner dealer. R62 had minor issue with electric clutch connection and internal reel leak. R70 had used jug installed on , instead of new one which I did not understand , unless it was an availability issue. After all of this, Joe said he and his dad are going to make another run next year and even do business with 1st dealer that snubbed them. Joe claims 1st dealer had lots of parts and 4 mechanics whom were very busy, but could not get to his machine even though it had been at dealer 6 wks early.
