Combines Deutz engine in R60

ClEAN is the KEYWORD on the Deutz engine. Yes, all Deutz's smoke and worse with cooler air(nature of the beast). If you read a recent web posting, Deutz now owns a "Water Cooled" engine to stay within European emission standards. Keep the engine blown out atleast once a day if doing soybeans and no oil spills or fuel leaks as this will cause pre-mature failure of the engine or possible fire. Also make sure the fan is in top shape as is the fan belt. Parts for the engine are about double or more in price than for a water cooled engine. Otherwise it should last a good long time if really well maintained. If the engine needs major repairs, price a replacement engine before doing the repairs, replacement is cheaper here than major work or OH.

Fan is gear driven threw a fluid clutch on that engine. There is no exhaust thermostat on the combine engines so fluid clutch is basically locked out no matter what temp the combustion temp is at. Thus combustion is raw at no load, low RPM on that engine. There is a engine oil thermostat to get it warmed up even at low ambient temps but you will need to rev engine off of idle aways to get combustion temps high enough to prevent smoking or raw diesel driping from exhaust in them cold temps. Check with owner to see if engine has been running warmer than normal. Depending on abrasiveness of dust in your area it could be time to check blower fan and or clean the coolers. Dementions for blower wheel are in service bulliton or take a water manometer reading of air pressure inside engine covers at 1000RPM and at 2300RPM with oil up close to operating temp. I have some readings you could compare to if you are worried about fan. Otherwise listen to engine for it should be quite with no clanging and sit there very steady without shaking around.

Thanks for the info guys. The engine seems to be clean and leak-free. The owner said the engine always worked fine for him with no problems of overheating. The machine has good rice tires with RWA and is being sold with no heads. The asking price is 14,000. Sound like a decent dealIJ Right now we are running an N5 and a F2 and are looking to upgrade from the N5.

My R60 never idles smoothly on cold days and it will spit unburned fuel on top of the engine hood. But put a load on it and that Deutz runs like a Rolls Royce. let me know if you pass on that machine. I could use another machine around here. My email addy is good. Thanks Tom in MN

For $14,000, it's a steel. I wouldn't take alot of time to think about it.
