Combines Deutz engine knockIJ

lets start with the knock. There is one thing for sure, if you are leaking at a firing ring, repair all six holes. If not you will do them all one at a time and may cause more damage. That is not just a shim but a firing ring. The top of the liner and the bottom of the head need to be lapped to the firing ring.they may also require machine work to correct inperfections, good luck finding a machine shop that knows what to do propperly. we do all of this work in house. the head bolts need to be replaced, you could try to determine stretch of each bolt or just bite the bullet now and replace the set. it is also possible that the top deck of the block (where liner sits) needs to be machined. almost any one can put one together and it may work for a while but if you want it to stay together there are a lot of details that need attention. Quite often heat is an issue in these failures. the engine needs to be properly cleaned and the cooling fan needs to be in good condition. the engine that is hard to start may not need much but a tune up. the valve need to be adjusted.it is important to do this. also the injectors need to be reconditioned. they do not just need reset they need a good recondition. we have found that use of a better fuelfilter will prolong life of fuel system on these engines. where are you locatedIJ there is an excelent Deutz mechanic in Kansas i can get you in touch with or I am located in Oklahoma.leave an e-mail address or number here if we can help. vstk

Thanks for the info. I live in east central Missouri, so I'm a good ways from either one of you.

Problem likely starts at base of jug. Once a shim starts to come out it starts to leak oil. As time goes on the jug starts to vibrate and lean. Soon combustion starts to leak by fire ring shim. The longer this goes on the more trouble you get in. For certain operators I have given up at shimming crown clearance just right and just installed a single .020 shim. This may hurt startability but one thick shims stays in place way better than a pair of thin ones. I have preached until blue in the face to get these guys to warm up engine well before reving and cool well before shut down but guess what I catch them doing all over again!!!! The I6 Deutz need this warm up cool down treatment or you will eventually have trouble. I make this judgement by watching operators who have this trouble and the others that have no trouble. Find another job for the guys that can't break that habit with that engine. Best of luck

For hard start, check the fuel boost solenoid on the pump. Ours was burnt out for about two years, it makes a big difference in how a cool motor starts.
