With the corn head on the combine like you said it weighs the front of the combine down. That would be the reason for the engine oil not registering right on the dip stick. In that big block motor the oil pan is probably wider than that of a six cyclinder this would lead to oil running to one side.

Your analysis is absolutely correct. Maybe it is a sinister plot to sell more oil. Smile!!! Tom in MN

I'll throw my two cents and no sense in by suggesting that you just rest the corn head on the ground to take the weight off the combine before shutting it down. We almost always let the head rest on the ground overnight rather than use the header ram stop.
