I guess it depends what engine you have and which injection pump is on it, but some injection pumps have a crankcase where the bottom end is lubricated by engine oil, so there is an inlet and outlet for engine oil. When there is a seal out in the wrong/right place, diesel fuel can get into the engine's crankcase this way.
