Disruption of the supply chain

When most restaurants and schools closed due to coronavirus, there was a milk surplus around where we stay. Some farmers didn't have an idea of what to do with the fresh lettuce usually supplied to restaurants. What happens when the supply chain gets disrupted, and there is nowhere to take the produce?

I know that a lot of fresh produce went to waste, or farmers had no option but let them rot. The pandemic has thrown a lot of things into disarray, and one option would be to donate to a food bank. The challenge would be in transporting the food, or suddenly there being a surplus too.
