The CIH combine history site says commonality of parts. Have you comsidered a 1666 or 88. They don't appear to be much more expensive than a 1644. I run a 1688 with 6 row and 20' 1020. Yes a 44 would do it, but in 60bu+, green stem beans my 88 had it's hands full this year. Also your going to put less hrs. on a bigger machine. Just my 2 cents! Good luck CW PS Keep asking questions on this site, now is a good time to ask- before you buy!

We have an early 94 with the small trany and final drives, 30.5-32 tires 6-30 corn head and 20' 1020 flex head and standard grain tank extension. have not had any trouble with the final drive or the trany but have broken both of the drive shafts that go from the trany to the final drives

Yes we had a 93' 1644 and it was a great machine but we did have the bearings go on the left side final drive.Changed right side right away although it looked alright when we took it apart. We had about 2300 hrs on when it failed.Had a 1063 "30 cornhead ,20' flex C-thru,bin ext. with the 44 small ext. on top(appox. 205 bu) 4wd,and 30.5x32's.If you changed the final bearings every 1800-2000 hrs I think you should be alright.Great simple machine, and has more power than our 2344. Good luck and glad to see someone buying a combine of the proper size for their needs. If about 85% of you guys would buy the right sized combine we would still have decent sized machines
