Combines Double crop farmers

Just because you have two crops doesnt mean you have twice the income. Some years you can have less income than with a single crop. It all depends on the year. I would say your landlord is not needy but greedy.......

Around us in central KS, farmers try to double crop all of the time. Most years, by the time they get the second crops planted, the rains have stopped and the temps soar. I enjoy watching them lose their shirts each year. last year much of the double milo in wheat stubble never headed out. All they are doing is depleting their soil by never letting it lay idle. Try if you like, but I think it looks pretty bad to a landlord to have a cruddy crop growing on his_her land.

I too had a landlord who wanted another half rent for double croping I tried to explain to them that the reason I was double croping was to try and regain some of my lose on the wheat crop ,they didn't buy it so I told them fine I'm not planting wheat anymore they were stuned what no wheatIJI said not unless you want to give me a brake on the wheat acres! well it's been four years now and no wheat and the last year I did plant wheat I sold them the straw. P.S. I don't miss lossing money either

No - I don't pay any extra to double crop. And yes double cropping is hit and miss. I only double crop with bin run soybean (notill) seed after wheat. It is very cheap to plant and I don't plow all summer. In the fall I can either cut for hay or harvest. I generally see a 15% to 20% increase in yield the following spring on the ground that was double cropped with soybeans and the ground is in better shape also. Added bonus is that our average yield per crop increases also which will pay off under the new program. It works for me. I would say that less than 10% of the farmers in my area double crop.

No. Conventional. If they grow up some and I plan to harvest I will spray RR and kill everything. That way I don't have any green stem problems. I do the same with milo.

I had a landlord that tried to pull that on me also. He says that the cash rent is per crop , I think it is per year. It is his land so I never plant wheat on it. I asked him if he thinks I am making big money off of it then to go to share cropping, he still takes his cash rent check. My dad always said that the landlord is always right if you are willing to keep the right to farm there land. Good luck.
