Combines doubleup helicals

Hurtt Equipment makes up a 1_4" shim kit that fits good.. I had to grind a bit off the ends of some of the helical bars. The holes were off a bit, but I managed to get the bolts in and they did tighten down nicely. Nice to hear of a "no breakdown" harvest. The only breakdown I had with my R60 (180 hrs.) was a broken tie rod end. I found the problem and am fixen it right before I store it away. O hey, the a_c compressor threw a rod, but I ran without a_c until I got a rain delay.

Hello DustyR72, I haven't used the loewen piggyback kit, but took Dan Hurtt's advice and installed a piggyback kit for my R7. I chose Sunnybrook Welding in Alberta as it was recommended by my dealer.

When I double stacked the helicals on my N6 I had to hone the holes out on the helicals that I used for spacers to get the bolts through. I used flat helicals from a salvage machine to stack the thresher end in my machine of course I bought new for the extra added rows. Amen on the N6 getting better with age. If Gleaner had introduced the N series with these hyper mod's Gleaner would have gained market share instead of lost, of course if that would have happened I would not have been able to buy my N6 so cheap either. Where did you add the extra rowsIJ I've never heard of this. Didn't you double up the seperator helicalsIJ I think Gleaner got screwed up when Deutz bought them. They just didn't do enough to upgrade them! Darren

Hi David Do you have a sunnybrook rotorIJ We are just going to replace the reverse bars with foward on the stock rotor and the piggyback the helicals. How did it change your loss over the sieve and rotor lossesIJ We have spring wheat, durum and barley and our N6 puts about 10 times as much over the sieve as our r72. never actually counted the seeds but the 72 is incredible in how losses are near zero! If a guy ever wanted a rainy day at harvest it would have to be because the air conditioner quit!! Here in south Alberta we have had to many of those rain delays. Most wheat in our area goes n1 but this year we have a bunch of n2 and worse. Darren

If you click on the Hyper Mods button to the left and then the P1 processor section you will see a diagram for stacking and adding helicals in the thresher end. Please note that this is mainly for corn and soybean machines. I am not sure how effective this mod is for small grains. I think Dan Hurtt and Co shims all the helicals to get the helicals to hold onto the straw and keep it moving through the cage. Pete Hinrichsen

Hello Darren, Yes, I have the "older" style of Sunnybrook rotor, not the new Generation 2 that just came out. That rotor style all I've ever known (R7 is my first Gleaner) but Gleaner, John Deere and Case owners (neighbours) who ride with me comment on it's smoothness and lack of vibration. It also has all forward bars (came this way new) Piggybacking the helicals caused no change in loss, either on the rotor or seive, which was_is extremely low anyway-I did remove the helicals in the "belly" of the separator side as per Sunnybrook's instructions. My R7 also has the Sunnybrook "modified" concave which has significantly more bars and wrap than the standard concave. Also have 4 concave filler blanks in permanently, hasn't caused any increase of cracks_splits in peas (lower than my conventional combine was) and certainly helped in tough wheat and flax (originally ran with only two concave blanks). You will also find that it's virtually impossible to remove concave blanks, unless you're double-jointed and have arms like match-sticks. As stated before, you'll be amazed how much smoother flax and tough wheat flow through, big swaths of immature canola are better than before, but could never be called "smooth" like other crop types. Has your N6 ever had it's concave changedIJ David

Yes the concave was changed a while back but it still looks pretty good and still straight. We put in a complete new cage (aftermarket but identical to stock) 2 years ago and the accelloratorolls are good.
