Combines Engine fan belt problems

I have not had that problem but I would suspect the Idler asy.. even if bearing feels good the spring tension could be at fault.. I have friend that work in truck shop and says they replace the tension idlers regularly...He says detriot engine are the worst about thrashing belts.

We had excessive problem with a '95 R72 with the l-10. I think there should be a law against them flat belts with no auto tentioner. Anyway we checked and double checked pulleys. We converted idler to the style that pushes belt toward pulleys like the M11's have. We called Gleaner and Cummins. We took belt tention gauge and checked tention on some new machines so we had a good guideline just how tight factory sets them. What it all boils down to is clean burnt rubber from V's and tighten untill you can just about turn over motor with fan blade. That will feel super tight when tring to wiggle belt. Check tention after very short run in period and then daily. Belt wont need to be quite so tight after it is run in. Have not had any more problems after that first learning curve.

THE l10 ENGINE HAS BEEN FAMOUS FOR THIS SO CAllED "PROBlEM". THE SERPENTINE BElT ON THIS ENGINE HAS TO BE FIDDlE STRING TIGHT, NO QUESTIONS ASKED, IF YOU WANT IT TO lAST. IN FACT THIS GOES FOR ANY SERPENTINE BElT SETUP THAT DOESN'T HAVE TENSIONER.

same thing here. I think the belt should be replaced evey 2 yrs. Then follow EXACTlY th eproceedure you prescribed.

Kurt we did three fan belts in one year but since we tightened that belt really tight the last one has lasted three years.Also i think the main problem is that the fan is so big and doesn't freewheel like trucks it takes a lot to drive so i now let the engine warm up for five minutes before it gets reved up so that the belt can grip that fan pulley and not slip when cold. john
