At times the point cam in the distributor will rust tight to the distributor shaft. Remove the cap and twist the rotor in the direction of normal rotation, it should rotate about 10 degrees and snap back to the original position when you release it. If it is stuck or stiff you will not be getting any spark advance which will boil the radiator and turn the exhaust red real fast. With a timing light on it you should get 15 to 25 degrees advance from idle to top speed.To free it up put a good solvent oil in the hollow rotor shaft and use a small vice grip to gently work the advance unit untill it works freely. The shaft should have a little felt pad in the end of the shaft This pad should have a few drops of oil every year to keep this shaft oiled. nobody seems to think of this , so they get dry and stick in the off season.
