Combines F2 engine maintence

I got a 69 F back about '82, had a main bearing turned on the gas engine (never had an engine at full power stop in 2 rotations before...) we put a salvage one in. Couple years ago that engine and whole combine got tired, so I bought the neighbor's F2 diesel. love it. Very easy to work on, I don't do engines, but I can repair the rest of the machine in the dark.Having engine problems with mine now, runs a bit when it's cool, but after a round or so in the corn it loses all power and sputters. Only have 10 rounds of corn left, but need to figure out the engine problem. See if the neighborhood mechanic can come over Monday. I was just curious if I killed it by not doing proper engine service.----Paul

It sounds like you have a fuel problem. There is a screen in the base of your sediment bulb. Carefully take it out and blow it out. I blow it out with my mouth air and wipe it off. Put it back and see if that helps. Next replace the fuel filter. Fill it with diesel before you screw it on. This will make bleeding easier. Good luck.

Two other things you can check for lack of power_not running at rated speed - my Pa ran my grandfather's F2 the year he passed away and it wasn't running up to speed. Traced that to a clogged fuel filter. Replaced it and it ran perfectly. We must have had a large dirt particle or something get into the fuel tank of the F3 we used to have. About once each season, it would act starved for fuel - we would have to take fuel line from tank apart and blow air to back flush whatever had settled into the fuel draw from tank. Put it back together and it would run fine for another year. Never did find whatever it was the would plug the fuel line - even drained the tank once in the off season trying to find whatever it was to no avail. Your engine trouble definately sounds like fuel starvation - wouldn't worry about the injection pump - they're pretty much maintnance free. Good luck!

I would try replaceing the fuel filters like previously suggested. Also check to see it the fuel is coming out it a good stream, and make sure the line isn't kinked or anything simple like that. I would also check the shut off valve to make sure it is open all the way. If it runs for awhile and then quits it could be the injector pump, but if it just sputters it is probably just a restriction in the fuel. Curt

Thanks all! Was the screen on the sediment bulb - pretty well plugged up, just enough junk in the bulb to jitter around and finish it up.----Paul
