I owned a late 76 F(might as well been an F2) with the 301cid diesel. Very fantastic machine until I outgrew it. I have been on this site for a couple years now and found more complaints about the gas(GM 292)engine. The diesel is very fuel efficient and had alot more power than the 262cid in my C2. Most F2's got the 433I 4 cylinder engine and did quite well. Diesels tend to get thru the tough spots easier.

I have owned a 79 F2 with the 292 gas engine and std transmission for 2 years now. When I bought it, I had been looking for a diesel_hydro, but this gas unit was close so I went and looked at it. It had been shedded and had 2250 hours. It was very, very clean and the price was right ($3200). I have been very happy with the machine and the gas_std. The gas actually has a higher rated horsepower. I have operated both the diesel_hydro and the gas_std, and don't have a preference for either engine. I do prefer the hydro, but get by fine with the std. The F2 has been a great machine for my needs.

The F2 is a extremely good machine, especially if you go through it and also update it. We have several machines with the 292 straight six and I'm telling you those are darn good engines. Sounds like hours are getting high on it for a gas though but if they took care of it (blew out radiator and also check the air filter condition and oil usage) that should give you some indication of the previous owners. The standard transmission is a very simple ordeal and you can still get the speed you want and alot more direct power. Check out both combines(I don't have experience with the diesel)and I would check the overall wear and you should be able to tell for the most part what was run through them and how hard the previous owner ran them. Saftey is no doubt n 1 but maintenance is n2! Good luck and let us know what you wind up getting.
