When we had our F3 we ran 430 black belly corn head (4 row 30") and a 313 flex head. Make sure you stay with a 300 series head as it did a far better job than the previous version. We had the 13ft head but could have used a 15ft for capacity. In our area we used the narrower head to make it easy for road transport going from field to field. Great running machine.

If you have an 860 now you won't want an F3, it will be much smaller in all ways. Go to an l2_3 or a later N series for equal size. They will be more to what you have been running with your 860.

My experience: Use your warranty and just go get another one. Nobody seems to know how to rebuild alternators anymore. Makes me wonder when the literature or salesman says: Make sure the battery is fully charged before you install this alternator.

You're upgrading from an F3 to an R62IJ Your going to experience an anxiety attack! ;-)

Alternators are set up with too much output anymore. If the battery is very weak the alternator will overheat. I don't like to see a delco 10si size alternator put out more than about 40 amps. Any more output really needs a bigger frame alternator to keep it cool. Try jump starting an engine with a really weak battery then see how hot the alternator is after just a few minutes of running.

I agree with what you wrote. I find that a lot of OEM alternators run until bearings fail or brushes wear out or hang up. Rebuilds fail much sooner and have most often electrical failure such as rectifiers or regulators. I suppose that the rebuilders would say that the rebuilt alternator is on an older machine with worse batteries, starters, wiring, etc... But I still do not think that the electrical componets in a rebuild or to the same quality as OEM. For this reason I still check what looks like original alternators internally to see what happened and hope to fix with brushes or something small.

I know a local rebuilder. He says they were forced to go to chinese parts to compete. I'm not sure I agree with that because I won't buy as much from him now. I have found good quality electrical parts from a company called Select Parts in Souix City Iowa. Everything I have ordered from them has been very good quality.

My R62 arrived and I can't believe how much wheat I can combine with it. I have a 20 ft head on it and I can go much faster with that than my F3 with a 13ft head. We also found the problem with the alternator it was a relay by the engine that was bad. Thanks for your help John
