Standard 3" case sections and guards with Crary spring loaded hold downs. Case guards are tougher than Crary and SCH.There easy to change sections, spring loaded hold downs only takes a minute in the morning to keep the knive on the guard. Also the 3" out cut the 1"1_2 when in grass or weeds. Now if you really want to make a nice bean header add the Crary air real. I have ran all these setups along side of each other.

I have a Hershal-Adams 3" system on my 820, and I am 100% no-till on my beans, lots of old standing stalk stubble and trash to cut through, I think it does a nice job. I never or rarely have a stalk get stabbed on a guard. The sections are all bolt-on, and you don't have to remove a guard to change a section. Case guards will bolt-on in an emergency. But I usually have plenty of spares on-hand. I will add that its on a Young's modified head, and I feel that I can out-shave anything and its full-stick forward at 4.5mph.

We are running the same setup and we've been real happy with it. We've cut as fast as 6 mph without running over beans. We've talked to Young's about other brands, he sells them but he said he's had the best luck with the Hersal-Adams system and he has heads running in every condition imaginable.

Is that rightIJ Have you asked Mr Young about running his system in wheatIJ He didn't want to discuss anything except beans at louisville. When the 1020 will cut to 1 inch height, why would we consider redoing an old head to cut closerIJ What diameter pulley are you running on your sickle driveIJ

I ran CaseIH 1.5" cut on 1020 head for several years and was never pleased with the job it did in no-till beans. 5 years ago I switched to a SCH system and am very pleased. like you, I was questioning the parts thing, not an issue. I keep a couple guards and sections on hand. We have some rocks, but in that 5 years I have replaced maybe 6 guards. I know what you are saying about the 1.5" cut and trying to keep it adjusted. The SCH will cut the same the last day of harvest as the first. Good luck in your decision.

Around here the 1020 will still leave a few beans in places, 90% of the time they are okay. Also the 1020 is built to like in my opinion and the header control is underneath the head where it's running in dirt all the time. The 1020 isn't a bad head and they made some impovements with it over the 820 but I think there are a few areas where they went backwards when they went to the 1020. We don't have much wheat around here but we've never had any problems cutting what we do grow with the standard 3" system.

I ran 1.5" hershel adams for many years on a 1020 and also Case_IH. I had a problem pushing BT cornstalks over on the beans in notill at anything over 4mph. I made the switch to the 3" SCH this year. The 1.5" was running the 400rpm pulley. A 500 was recommended but when I went to my dealer he said the green stems had people coming in to switch to the 600rpm pulley. I went to the 600 right away and was very impressed. When the stems finally dried out the 1680 Cummins with the stewart steel front would make 5.2mph in 42 bushel beans before anything would push under the 1020. Standard reel.
