Combines Feed Chain Shocks

I have a 96 R42 and installed the shock kit to both upper and lower feed chains before fall harvest and the biggest advantage that I could tell was what I could no longer hear

I'll assume that sickle is in good shape and adjusted properly. The main thing I have ever done to help eliminate sickle shack is to slow up the sickle by a pulley size or two. You can slow up engine with everything engaged to get an idea if slowing it up will help. Standard sickle speed is set to cut at very high speeds. Newer machines have counterbalanced wobble box and have flyweight added to back shaft plus stiffening added in that area. Rolf has added flyweight right to wobble box pulley on his flex head. We have added channel iron under augers to help prevent straw from coming over the back if not factory installed. We have extended four inch flighting all the way to centerline of finger area to prevent straw from standing in front of fingers at times preventing clean cut. Make sure filler between header and feeder is slid back so there is no pocket for crop to flow over. Now as far as shocks. All sorts of feeding and wear and breaking and noise problems went away after installing shocks.

I have had some problems with the 400 series 30ft front.I had regular knife breakage and regularly wear the splines at the coupler. I replaced the wobbler but this did not help. I have since replaced the knife and the wear plates and adjusted the knife to minimise its contact with all stationary surfaces such as hold down clips, the cutter bar and knife guards.I had made and installed a fly wheel on the wobbler. At the same time I replaced the chain and sprockets on the table auger drive.I have discovered that if the chain has the slightest slack or any stretch, the front will hammer. It will cause high rates of wear on the splines and hammer the knife until it breaks. It is my belief that the 50 chain is too light and should be 60 chain or even a duplex. The new 50 chain requires replacement now after only 100 separator hours in 12 bags of standing wheat.Check it out and let us know how you get on.Regards nico,Cumnock, Central West NSW

G'day Richard Try the Flywheel on the Wobble box and another one along the pto shaft on the left hand end, I used a weld in taper lock as these don't come loose like the AGCO set screw type!!! Put in as big as flywheel as you are willing to try as this will make a big difference to front shake as well as the drive spline lasting a lot longer. See how you go, and let us know on how you get on! Rolf
