Combines Feeder chain adjusters loosen

The only way we have found to keep it tight is to tighten the two nuts VERY tight, using a long cheater bar on a 1_2 inch breaker bar or hooking a 1 inch end wrench over the end of a 15_16 end wrench. Neither way is very safe because a wrench could break and pieces could fly. Good luck with your idea, I am anxious to hear about it.

I would be interested in your idea so have included my e-mail above.I have wondered if the loosening is due to the bolt in the slot that holds the front roller arms simply being stretched with all the stress it must bear when a wad gets in the feeder house.Don't say that it's a foolproof solution but have had good luck with this problem by replacing those bolts with a high quality grade 5 or even a grade 8 bolt and using a self locking nut for the second or lock nut..Been real particular in adjusting the chain and all of that together seems to have helped quite a bit.

I had the same problem. All I did was put flat washers on each side of the feederhouse slot and haven't had any problems since. I think there was too little surface to tighten up on, so the washers spread out the load. Dave

My dealer has found a different I bolt that has a larger eye for more surface area on feeder house which is the same principal as a large washer as posted above. I have also made a plate with a slot to weld on to strenghen that area. I haven't had any trouble since strenghening that area and using the larger eye bolt.

I have a 1660 and purchased it in 2000. I too had the bolt always coming loose and then you would have to keep an eye on it every day. So during the off season I was thinking about this problem. As you know there is a spacer in the arm and your 5_8" bolt is the pivot point. So my fixing solved the problem for me. If you take out the arm and place the spacer in it, you will see the length of the spacer is shorter that the width of the arm. You need to grind off some of the extra steel on each side and then place a flat washer on each side of the arm on installation. What is the problemIJ The width of the arm is not pivoting on the spacer. Upon grinding down the arm, I have solved this problem. Any IJ just ask. JWK
