west illini, If you are replacing the sprockets, I would sure replace the chain also. An old chain on new sprokets will eat up the new sprockets pretty fast. I bought an after market chain from Abilene Machine couple of years ago that was several hundred dollars cheaper and it seemed to perform as well as the OEM chain in my other machine. K.A.

Would recommend changing sprockets as well as chain. Usually when the chain breaks it indicates the pins or links are getting weak. CASE IH OEM chain is only $378.00. Check with CASE IH dealer for price on 3-strand chain also.

loosen the chain (take all the tension off),then take 2 or three links and push and pull them apart. Pay attention to the area where the pins on the outer link go through the inner link - if there is about 1_3 to 1_2 the width of a pin diameter of play, then get a new chain. the wear surface on the chain is between the inner bushing of the link, and the link pin. easy to see, but hard to expalin.....

The manual gives the amount of stretch that is acceptable before replacement. You just measure the length of both chains and compare to number in manual. But I agree with what has been said before: If you replace sprockets, replace chain.

I have thought about a 3 strand but that would mean a new drum (stone). The more I think about It will all be replaced (chain and sprockets) and be ready for a long time. I put 150 engine hours on this year THanks
