Thanks for this brilliant explanation of marvelous technology.

I could see a REAl benefit installing this tranny in self-propelled harvesters, since you're often towing a heavy load!

The new CIH 8010 uses a CVT to drive the rotor. Guess they thought Massey had a good idea. No more nasty vary drive belts. Don't know what they did with the wheel drive.

I'm with dakota! tbran, you have a gift for making complex things simple to understand and in a very few words. Thanks. R.O.M

I have spent a couple of hours in one and they are very smooth but powerful. It is amazing to be running 31 mph and running 1900 rpm engine rpm. Air ride cab and front suspension makes for a smooth ride. I think the applications for it are numerous. Grain cart tractor, you could set it to creep while filling the truck, then off to the combine. Baling, silage cutting, the jobs that it could do better than any other tranny is endless.

The speed sensing hydrostat_planetary drive is nice but has one draw back. In a severe load the cyl slows down, the hydro speeds up thus calling for more HP, if that calls for more than the engine can deliver the results are not good... but then the reverser is nice huhIJ The belt drive on most combine cyls is not a piece of cake to change like the Gleaner R's. IF one fails a belt it is a one man five to fifteen minute job. We service quite a few N_R series, we sell less than ten cyl belts for N's - R40 - R75 (all rotarys) inclusive, _year out of three stores. Bad for parts sales but quite a rep for the performance and reliability. ( one customer usually accounts for 2 _yr - regular cowboys .)

I talked to our local dealer the other day about the CVT. He's sold on the idea and beleives we will begin seeing them in everything from farm equipement to transit buses to highway tractors. He mentioned its about a $12k(Can) option. Now what I want to know is if these things are so simple( as well as easy to repair) and will soon be in widespread use, why the big premiumIJIJ I realize there are develop costs but I they take over from 'mechanica' trannies shouldnt the cost be lESSIJIJ

I'm not sold on the cvt tranny yet. looks like a lot of electrical stuff to go wrong to me and the Fendt system I saw looked really complicated to operate. Hopefully they will keep making tractors with the other transmissions available for those of us who are satisfied with the old and inferior and don't really want to pay for the new and improved.
