Paul, they were in my 7720 when I got it 14 years ago and I have never touched them.

Take the filler plates out and take them to the slavege yard! I have ran a old 3300 flat fan gas combine for to long with out them! The 78 6600 I have now works great with out them also in corn and soybeans, sounds like you you need new rasb bars.

lay a pencil in the grooves of the cylinder bars-if the bar height is below that of the pencil, replace the bars.

I agree. Check your rasp bars. I had the same problem ( concave plugging )2 years ago in dry beans. Changed rasp bars and have had no problems since. Plates were out at the time and are still out. This is on a 6600.

Sorry, should have mentioned that rasp bars are good. I think one issue I may have had was running cylinder too slow. I had it at 300 for corn so I started at 400 for beans and was planning to move up as necessary...erring on the side of being too slow. And I think I was really too slow to get them through. PossibleIJ

I think you're right that your cylinder speed was too slow. I always had the filler plates in for soybeans. I did try leaving them out 1 year after having them out for clover seed. It cracked 3 times as many beans as with them in. I have always had them in since.

i've noticed that if you are running your feeder house chain too fast(did not change to the large sprocket on the feeder house drive chain or did not set your variable speed feeder house drive to the lowest speed before you disconnected the hydraulic line to attach for the reel height) the cylinder is not fed properly and will slug. did this once on my 6620 because i was in a hurry. just a thought. hope you solve your problem.

take those filler plates out, we have a 9500 and last year we couldn't go past two miles an hour because it felt like the cylinder was going to come up through the seat. we took the advice of some on here and took out the filler plates and it has been like operating a new combine. you won't believe the difference... we shelled 682 acres of corn with them out and 600 acres of beans with them out, and 230 acres of wheat.... also, no more vibration from the cylinder when starting back up after dumping a bin.

I too have a 9500 and take the filler plates out for soybeans and wheat and see the same benefits that you stated. However, I put the plates in when I shell corn. How did your combine do in corn with the plates out and what was the moisture of the corn at harvestIJ
