Combines Flex head vs floating cutter bar

A true flex head has a cutterbar and a floor sheet that move relative to one another, with no step-up in between. A floating cutterbar is what it sounds like, just the bar floats. Floating bar attachments can't follow contours as closely as a true flex, and they have a sheet-metal step-up between the bar and the header floor that the crop must be pulled up and over by the reel. I would rather cut beans with a 10' rigid head on my K2 than with the floating bar I have now, which is a major PITA. But I have the old orange-reel pitman-drive head. The black-reel wobble-drive heads, where the drive box floats with the cutterbar, work better. Either has a problem feeding in short beans, though, because of that step. Supposedly there are a small number of real flex heads out there for the K2, with long dividers, and if I knew where one was, I'd go so far as to have a deathmatch to get it.

I have a series II head for a M2 with a floating cutterbar and a pitman drive. If you install the header hose mod it will eliminate all your trouble feeding. It puts the beans up where the reel can reach them without running it into the cutter bar. I know it may look odd or it may seem like it won't work but it does. I don't know how many times I've been asked what is that forIJ My opinion, Part-time

I have the hose mod, and it still won't feed that great in 6" tall, deer-grazed beans (been seeing too much of that lately).

I have had both and prefer the flex. I do not believe that the flex was made for the k2 but it can be made to work. A lot of guys around me have converted the early f2 with the electric actuated automatic header height and put the flex heads on with automatic control. It works great. As far as putting on the rock guard i have a Johnson and it is ok but I plan to switch to the pvc pipe I think it will work better.
