I am a small farmer with about the same acreage as you. I have usually corn, winter wheat, and soybeans. I bought a used late style 1460 5 years ago (with electric auto header control). It replaced an IH 715 I bought new. My experience has been much the same as yours. The only difference was that mine was at 2500 hours then but had been used by a rough operator (who put stones and finally a piece of steel through it and ran it in the mud doing corn) prior to my purchase. It had been fitted with the rock trap, feed reverser, and the 1660 style spindles (and 14.9-24 rear tires. It always had the 30.5-32 front tires. Just before I got it, the transition cone(with vanes),rotor cage, auger bed(with augers) concaves, grates, feeder bottom, top and bottom sieves had all been changed on an insurance job. I bought the unit cheap to allow me to finish off the rebuild. I did the feeder, the elevators, grain tank cross auger, discharge auger (including gears),rotating air intake screen, hydro pump and motor. I also had a brand new chopper installed (2166 style). Finally I bought an excellent shape used specialty rotor. In the end I had a new threshing mechanism from one end to the other. The paint was also good. The only parts that haven't been rebuilt are the engine , transmission, and final drives. This machine has run extremly well for the 5 seasons I have had it and will probably still be in good shape when I am done farming. I have looked at a 1660 and suddenly realized mine has virtually all the 1660 updates except for the fore and aft reel control. By the way the 1020 head with electric auto header control is a joy to operate as compared to the 820 header with mechanical cable on the 715.
