go for it but after a year or two the nephew will want to run the big combine and you might be running the old F just what happens to me at time got the old K here for that reason and seems like i am running it more than the F2 maybe i will just get another F2 and solve my problem if i had the money it would be easyily said and done just my 2 cents

Don't know what the other combine is but at any moment it could break down. Any running combine is better that a broke down one. The price is right. Gas isn't too much higher than farm diesel right now. You won't have a big investment if you don't use it that much plus you can tell everybody you have "2" combines. We have 2 M2's and a F2. One of the M2's will break and we go get the F2 to keep us running.

3-5 Gallons an hour, depending on how hard you're working it. Early F's had an Allis-Chalmers G-262. 1971 and newer used Chevy 292 engines, be sure and check oil in the belt-drive govenor on the Chevy engine.

With the Chevy 292, you can figure about 1 1_4 to 1 1_2 gallons per acre.

I would hire a custom operator if I needed help getting the crop in. Those old combines might get the job done but a custom combine would be faster plus you don't have to get another driver and the repairs aren't your problem. Besides nothing is free, I'm sure if you look the f it needs somthing, plus you have to pay property taxes and insurance on it.

No sales tax on machinery, either. I hope NJ does not get this idea. My state income tax, fuel tax, and sales tax on non-farm stuff is bad enough.

It seems like every other person on here always suggest having a custon cutter harvest your crop. In my neck of the woods (NEIN) nobody does custom harvesting unless it is to help out a neighbor due to health reasons and then we don't and won't take any money to do it. Thirty to fourty years ago a lot of 80 acre dairy farms would hire their wheat and oats harvested and my father was one of the few that had more combine than acres of his own to harvest so we did custom harvest. Those farms and farmers that planted a crop and expected some one else to harvest it are long gone.

Had lots of experience with the F combines! The price is right and you can still get most of the parts for them and that 292 GM motor is the best one I think they produced! Don't be afraid of it! The gear shifts will last a long time and are reliable! It might cost some money but don't let someone else fly through your fields and put it back on the ground just so they can get a pay check. If you are fussy and somewhat mechanically inclined go with the F. If not then you might be better off to custom harvest. These are just my opinions.
