Some of our wheat is breaking out of the boot. 26 degrees tonight 24 tomorrow. Corn is V2 stage wich would not be a problem with a mild freeze. 24 degrees could be a problem. $4.00 corn is nice, It's getting late in southeast Ks. for this kind of trouble. Hours on the new R75 should be low this summer. Now it is starting to snow possible 2" by morning. Gota go check my Ins. policy.

Your USA crop situation, particularly wheat, is followed with a great deal of interest down here in Oz as it affects not so much our planting program but mostly our prices when we start to harvest in november and on through. What should we be looking for and what and when are your crops most vulnerableIJ

Depends on how far south the wheat is as to what stage it is in. From joint stage forward wheat can be vulnerable although joint stage can withstand quite a bit colder temperatures than at heading and pollination. There is going to be some damage somewhere. The amount of freeze damage can take awhile to be determined. One salvation for the U.S. as a whole is we have more acres planted this year and the crop is rated 2_3rds good to excellent so we can lose some and still raise a fair amount of bushels.

I will attest to all the experts that frosted corn will come back. We had some two years ago that came back, but it is never the same. I think if you have dead leaves on the ground after the frost_freeze you are looking at 10-40% in yield loss. Good conditions the rest of the way may make the loss seem less, poor conditions may amplify the loss, but rest assured if the crop goes on to make 160 it would have been better. I showed 21 degrees at 7 am in southwest Il. Thats enough to freeze the ground. With highs today in the low 30's and teens tonight any corn in this area to the north will freeze, even under ground. With below normal temps and chances of rain predicted through all of next week and saturated soils in most of central Il and Northern Il look for delayed planting thoughts to start energizing the corn market. The last few years most Il corn was planted by the 3rd or 4th week of April with quite a bit being planted next week. We will be behind that by a bunch unless the weather turns. I don't know much about wheat so I'll leave that to someone else, but it can't be good.

We run JD's and Cats. Wish I could get a Gleaner on the farm but the boss has a little to much green blood. The farm is around Hepler. NW of Pittsburg 30 miles.
