The last time I checked springs, the free length was 16

I'm thinking your chain is tight enough but would rather that false floor was added just above the bottom throw of chain where the crop is not below top throw of chain where it makes little to no difference other than hidding what might be puckering between slats and slinging out forward. I never paid much attention to free length of springs but that don't seem like near enough.

thanks for your thoughts. i have suspected that the false floor would be better on the lower side of the cross member since about 5 mins after we put it in although it has made a marked improvement where it is.what i,m getting at with the spring length is that the spring is tightly compresed to achieve reasonable chain tension and there doesn't appear to be much room for rearward movement of the drum before it blocks down solid. when set at 14.5" b_w anchor and bolt head the chain is what i would call slack and lying on the elevator floor for most of its length with the stops in lowest position. thanks bucko

I would want spring to bottom out before chain has a chance to bow up to far. When chain bows up to far it will lose control of straw. That is whats great about the false floor system Gleaner put in the R42-72s. The false floor system has them rails with poly wear surface that chain will come up against and go no higher. Allthough I think they should have room for more clearance under chain for the large models I believe the rails helped feeding problems more than the false floor. I found alot of this out the hard way. That is the reason you might of saw that I recommend running spring for rear chain on newer machines at more like 4.9 instead of 5.1". You see rear chain has no rails for chain to come up against so a little more tention has proved to reduce feeding problem big time when your in a condition that feeding is bothersome. When rear feed would lose control of straw the front feed would have no place to put straw so it will stall first. Anyway about the only way you can increase tention with your older system is remove half links or move drum anchor ahead a hole. Not much of the time will feeder be running empty or at least try limit that time to limit floor wear. Good luck

sorry tom i meant to thank you. the length of a new spring on the n series is 405mm or a poofteenth under 16" .
