Gear case slid onto the shaft nicely with no excess slack or lack thereof. Put a brand new key on the shaft as well. I even went as far as to replace the bearing and lock collar that wasn't out on the opposite side of the crank........preventive maintenance far as I was concerned. Think welding a bolt into that shaft and using a nut with lock tite would work in the future instead of a full RandR job again to replace the boltIJ I can't fathom why it wouldn't work. Didn't know what I was up against first hand when this project started. After being into it, I think this idear will work.

What bothers me is that JD had a recall to remove that small bolt, drill out the hole and put the larger bolt in but yours and mine (and how many othersIJ) were never done. Mine had the wood boxings and the shaft was wrecked so it meant replacing both and all new bearings.
