Combines Frozen wheat

Too early to tell. All crop insurance adjusters are waiting ten days before beginning assesments. Where the snow fell some wheat is flat on the ground, broken stems, and leaf burn is starting to really show up. First cutting of alfalfa is basically gone. Oats that were planted were 6" high are now limp and flat on the ground. Winter storm warning posted for western Kansas again.

Stepped out the door Monday morning and the smell of sillage was everywere in southeast Kansas. Some wheat is falling over the rest is brown. like the Hemi guy says "THAT CAN'T BE GOOD"

Here in Tennessee, extension agents are saying crop is 80-90% lost. My fields still look good with little damage, but the next week should tell the whole story. All mine was in boot stage. Some around here was heading out and was likely lost. No silage smell except from the leaves on trees that were killed.

Crop insurance for frosted wheatIJ Down here in Aus we can't get that, all we can insure for is Hail and Fire. One year we had 60bushel wheat that was frosted at grain fill ended up yielding only 3 bus that hurts and last year we only got our seed back no insurance here avilable for drought. But seeing good crop get frosted is the worst thing I've had (in farming that is). All the best from downunder

Well, the new week tells a whole different story. At least 50% of my heads were killed and in some places, 80% were with plenty of stalk damage too. Who knows what it will yield now.

We are still waiting to access the damage fully, but the 4" of snow we received last Friday night here in SC Kansas could not have helped much. Even though it was gone by noon the next day, having an already damaged crop completely covered by snow can't be a good thing.

Drove around several hours today checking our wheat and neighbors in SE Ks. The late planted wheat in Nov. might make a crop but the Oct planted wheat is hurt very bad. Adjusters wont give any numbers for a few more weeks but the heads that are pushing out are turning brown as soon as the sun hits them.

Jeff, we went to Humboldt this weekend for a family gathering and I your wheat did look pretty hard hit. From the car it looked worse than ours, especially the additional amoutn of lodging. Many of the fields were flat.
