Combines full fingered auger

I was told by a JD combine operator that one can make a "poor mans" full fingered auger by attaching rubber flaps every so often on the auger. I do not know the details of how he did it but said it worked as well as his new head.

I don't know about your neighbors, but I have never heard a JD combine owner say anything bad about those green grinders, even when they cost an arm and a leg to rebuild_repair year after year and feed the pheasants. The full finger auger is a band-aid fix on the JD flex head, to compensate for their shallow flighting. The deep flighting on the 800 head is great, especially in good yielding crops. In sparse crops, it can suffer but requires other adjustments to improve feeding. Easiest is to adjust reel fingers tipped back all the way so crop is carried back closer to the auger. Use the reel effectively; that's why it's there. The JD head suffers severely from their short flighting in good crop. You'll also want to install a set of the raised feathering sheets from AGCO which improve feeding of the 800 in short crops. You can still use the Johnson Rock Guard, but the raised feathering sheets will do a far better job of improving feeding into the conveyor auger. I wouldn't want AGCO to put a full fingered auger in the 800. Not necessary and too great a chance to break off and get in combine. I suspect your JD friends are overstating the role of the full fingered auger.

I helped a neighbor this fall. He has a CaseIH with no fingers in the auger. It has continuous flighting, and I liked it. It seemed to feed well and eliminated the problem of the fingers bending or wearing and ripping the auger into two pieces.

Well put. I have never seen a 700 or 800 head goof up flow as long as the crop gets to the auger. I don't see how a full finger auger would help crop get to auger. I do see how full finger auger would benifit a short flighting auger in that it will help pull and lay straw down. It would likely help out the old 300,400, and 500 heads just like it must help the green ones but I would rather trade up to a 700 or 800. Do take a look at trimming flighting on far right and left so you can retard fingers and bring reel back further in them conditions where you are having a problem.

The raised feather sheet kit also fits on the 500 series heads and does help. Just be sure to clean out under them occasionally. The kit made our head usable. I can't figure out how to use the hose trick or a bean saver with it, however. I do miss using the bean saver. Another bonus to the raised feathersheets is it helps keep rocks out of the machine. Now they lay on the cutterbar instead of laying in front of the conveyor with everything else that wouldn't feed into the machine.
