Combines Getting an F2

You can use 2 12volt batteries but make sure they are connected in parallel. Your 2 6 volt are connected in series to produce 12volt. The combine functions on 12 volt. The 4 cylinder diesel is one of the better engines Allis made and I imagine it will start right up with new batteries. The thing you want to check is the fuel tank. If it wasn't full when put in the shed, then condensation water is probably in it. Drain it and the fuel lines before you start it. Clean the sediment bulb and replace the spin on fuel filter. Also make sure the radiator fluid is good and at operating level and clean the air filter just for good measure. Allis Chalmers advertised the F's as the Flagship of their fleets. They were Great machines! Your F2 is a newer stepup from them. They started making them in 1977 as a shortback (shorter tail, straw walkers, shoe). In 1978 - 1982, they made them with a long back (increased the length of the tail by about 18") Your bound to have some things to fix after sitting that long, but its a good machine and every bit worth your efforts.

Dive into it sounds like the price is right. I ran a f2 for about 15 years. they are very good combine if you need help feel free to write. Oh as said before drain and replace filters. the bowl also this is a good start

Thanks for the tips, guys. It's great getting feedback. So, what about using the one 4DlT batteryIJ Is it big enough to replace the 2 6 voltsIJ I wouldn't need 2 12's, would IIJ Could you tell me what type of fuel filters I need to get for this unit and how do you get to themIJ I didn't notice if they're on the side of the engine facing the fuel tank or if you have to get in the hopper and take that access plate off to get to them. How do I bleed this engineIJ I suppose there's hand pump between the tank and injection pump like any diesel, but where do I find itIJ Also, the cylinder that moves the unloading auger and the steering cylinder both have rust pits on them. Can I smooth 'em out w_WD 30 and 00 steel wool, or do I need to replace themIJ I'm getting sort of excited about this project now. Keep the suggestions coming!

I would spray the cylinders with a lube. i wouldnt use steel wool unless they are really bad. the fuel bowl i think is on the right side of the machine (or left). Fuel filter should be to the rear. I would say put 2 12 volts on the combine. power always run low at night plus piece of mind is worth it

Your fuel filter is on the rear side of the engine (accessible from near the ladder or fuel tank side). The fuel filter is attached on the housing of the fuel pump which has a small plunger primer. This is not the injector pump. The oil filter is on the front side of the engine and you have to access it through the service panel in the grain tank - take towels with you. Use 2 12 volt batteries. Diesel starters usually draw more amps, plus these engines don't usually like starting in cooler weather (temps less than 40 degreesIJ). I can remember cranking my for 4 times (20 seconds per crank) to get it started some cold mornings. Don't use ether!!!! It is hard on pistons. So, put 2 batteries on it. Get a manual or if you have one, read it. It goes over all these points. There is just too many things to describe on email, plus a manual will be there the next time to reference quickly.

i would reccomend staying with two six volt batteries it will give more cold cranking amps when needed this sounds dumb but when it is thought over the two sixes will have a deeper and longer lasting cycle to them i didnt believe it till an old ih mechanic told me it when we were building a pullin tractor and couldn't get it to start without a battery charger boosting it then when i had my altenator pn the f2 rebuilt at a altenator and starter repair shop i asked him and he told me the same just my 2 cents

The opther posters are right - don't use ether and stick with 6volt batteries. They crank better. I can't emphasize enough - DON'T use ether.

We use ether all the time on our Gleaner C2 diesel. It is the only way it will start. Even with 2 batteries and a charger set to boost you would crank and crank and nothing. even at 80 F it wont start with out ether. Can of ether costs 2 bux a new starter can cost 500 or more. Jason

Yeah, I don't really have anything against the careful use of ether either. However, when this is the case, it usually means the injector and pump needs rebuilding. Good luck replacing your C2. What year model is it, anywayIJ
