Combines getting my E ready for corn

Retrofarmer- 500 on the cylinder should be about right to get started, we ran cylinder up as high as we could adjust it last year, about 7_8" on the concave indicator. We just used the regular chaffer, worked well. Never put a special screen in the raddle chain. Couldn't really remove any concave bars, ours is the real early one that doesn't have the drop down concave doors. When the corn started to get really dry (14-15%) we were really grinding it no matter what we tried. Our E is for sale, has a 330 corn header and 12 ft grain header with pickup reel if you're interested, we bought a bigger machine. I'm in NW Pa. Pat

If you don't have curtain to keep raddle from back feeding make sure you move your walkers back as far as they will go. This will help keep small ears from back feeding. I would try running three concave and up the cylinder speed only if you have problems. Davey G.

The corn or deep tooth chaffer has about 1 5_8" spacing between the wires, and deep fingers. The small grain (universal) chaffer has about 1 1_8" spacing between the wires and shallow fingers. If you're going to harvest around 20% moisture or under, the chaffer you presently have installed should be adequate. As mentioned, 3 concave bars should be enough to roll the kernels off, but they need to be in very good shape. If you find a few cobs with a few kernels attached very frequently, you may need to add a 4th concave at the rear. Cylinder bars wear for a very long time in an E, since these machines feed evenly across the full width (no low spots at the ends).

Make sure you have the cylinder filler bars in for corn. If trashing a few beans will not hurt to leave filler bars in but absolutly do not thrash wheat or any crop with cylinder speeds 800 to 900 and up. Have heard of the filler bars busting through top cylinder cover and coming through the cab floor.
