its been a loooooong time but...this was a postive groung sys. remember + gnd. now.. take the belt off the alt. key on. take the top off the voltage reg. take your finger and push the open set of points closed. If your nose lights up and turns red ......no I am kidding. This will not hurt you but since you are going to use a tooth pick now anyway again close the open set of points. The pulley should spin..now it will charge as it is polarized. (this has nothing to do with a camera) If it doesn't then look at the points. are they glazedIJ Borrow your mother in laws nail file, mine uses a hoof rasp so I can't let you borrow it, (just kiddin mom)(shees on the net now - geez) and file the points, both sets. Still no work then check the wires, switch, amp. meter. and then have the gen put on a machine and have checked (then repolarize) and lastly change the reg. Still no workIJ Tell your local dealer that if you don't fix this under warranty you will trade it for a new CAT lex......... [ If all else fails sometimes I find it best to restart on some of these oldies with " Our father who art........good luck tb

Alan, I would start with the engine. Put a good battery on it and see if it will turn over. Check for water in the crankcase. All of the bat boards on the reel will probably be rotted away. Chains are probably all frozen. Belts are probably dry rotted. You are looking at a potential bottomless pit that will suck your bank accounts dry. You can hire any harvest work done a lOT cheaper. But if you must, you must. There is plenty of cheap advice to had for the asking on this board. let us know about your decision and good luck.
