Check all augers, auger tinwork for holes, straw walkers, and sprockets. Also check inside inspection holes on side and rock damage of cylinder, ect. When the return augers are completly gone you know there are lots of hours on that machine. Jason

I would go with the remanufactured engine - If you farm small acreage - that combine will still last you a long time- other than GPS and crop monitors - the threshing technology hasn't advanced that far in that style combine to warrant replacement for a small acreage farm. You will also have some warranty protection and probably won't cost much more than a rebuild of another engine. Unless you know the replacement engine - it could be junk as well since they many don't seem to last much more than 2500 hrs without an overhaul. Recently our dealer sold a l3 for $20,000. So it might be worth fixing.
