The N6 is a good machine and better if it was a series 3 and Great if someone has hyperized it for you. The N6 had many updates and the engine is the largest drawback, change the oil regularly and do an UNDERHAUl aka (bearing and rod bolts) at least every 3000 hrs or you will have a ventilated block. My N6 has over 3000 hrs and has had lots of TlC and is a series 3 and runs like a Bat Out of H... because it is hyperized. It actually runs better than my neighbor's R62. The R6 was better machine because they slowed the engine down. Other than the engine problem, which can be dealt with, the N6 is a good machine, many are still in use, with thousands of hours and thousands of acres behind them.

Good cheap machines,lots of capacity and parts are still available. Engines are the trouble spot as they were wound a little too tight. Hyperizing will help reduce the load on the motor and cage, increase capacity and give you a very clean grain sample. Rod bolts at 2500-3000 hours is cheap insurance, putting a 12.5" pulley on the pto and slowing the motor down helps too. Best of all you have the Mighty Medicine Men of Gleaner here at this site to help you with any problems you may have. To answer you question if it has had a good home I don't believe it will break down any more than any other 15-20 years old machine. Pete Hinrichsen

Very Good Question! Mine just went through the 3000 hr work and has the R6_8070 engine rapped to the N6 rpm's, give us more info Pete as mine is Hyperized and I would like to slow that engine down and that pulley would do it correctIJ

In addition to the larger pulley you have to have the pump recalibrated to 220hp at 2400rpm high idle. Midwest Diesel in FT Dodge,Ia (Jim)did my pump, Hyper II recomended them and others on this site also speak high of these guys. I think the series 3 N6's and the R60's had the larger pulley with the motor slowed down to 2400 rpm high idle. If I remeber correctly the N5's andR50's also had the larger 12.5" pulley. My 12.5" pulley came off a R50 and I sent my injector pump to Midwest Diesel in FT Dodge Ia and had them set the pump for 220hp at 2400 rpm high idle, basically N5 specs with a little more hp. this slows the motor down about 2-300 rpm. Maybe HyperII or Jim from Midwest Diesel can add some more information. Pete Hinrichsen

Fort Dodge is not very far and the pulley shouldn't be hard to locate with Iowa Falls, Colfax, and Chariton,IA all within 90 minutes of me. But will the rpm change have a large effect on the hydraulic pump pressure, and lift_react speedIJ I wasn't informed until this past summer that my N6 had the latest of the engines in it, 8070_4W220_R6 and a few N6's when they did the bottom end, that is why I want to save this beast and slow it down. It is one of the N6's that doesn't smoke like a freight train going across the field like most did, now I know why.

If you have that updated motor in your N6 are you sure that it isn't already turning at the lower rpm'sIJ My N6 rpm's would run about 2850 with no load on it before I slowed it down and the whole nieghborhood knows where I am by the black smoke, if I am using my 7060 and 190xt to haul in loads it gets pretty smokey. There is no way I can sneak up on anybody. I haven't noticed any difference in the hydraulics. Where are you locatedIJ I live in eastern Ia and back in the early seventies I went to college in Forest City and worked in Britt and Charles City for a couple years putting up Morton Buildings. Thanks for the info, I'll have to check and see if the NO lOAD is that high. Mine is definitely a Series 3 and marked as such, even the Golden Anniv. Edition. And if I lived 1 mile to the north of here my address would be Colfax,IA (HEAVY GREEN COUNTRY)and I have a JD lawn tractor(that they never have parts for and it's the newest model diesel),the rest is ORANGE_SIlVER or red.

John, Your series three manual should have the rpm specs for your motor, you could also measure your pulley on the pto it isn't very hard to get at. I have to quit posting late at night as I said that 2400rpm was high idle, actually that is the load rpm and the high idle is 2520-2615(these are N5 specs). Sorry about the brain farts.
