I believe the chain may be to tight. the inch and a half sounds ok but the method you are checking it may be the problem. Your manual should give you a pound lift to check the chain slack. I used to use a small scale that we weighed poultry with to check our chain. also make sure the chain is tracking ok. make sure the front adjustment is the same on both sides. Hope this helps.

When it does this, before you turn it backward, open the inspection doors and look at the rear sprockets. If the chain is trying to 'climb' on a tooth of the sprocket, the chain is strecthed due to pin wear. If the links are down in the cog the way they should be, remove the lower inspection door and have someone pull the pivot belt the direction it runs. As the clutch slips you should be able to find the item that is hanging up. We also found 2-2.5" gives longer chain_sprocket_idler life than 1 - 1.5" and unless in some special conditions runs just as well.

Thanks guys, turns out the right side was too loose, about 3 inches compared to 1 and 1_2 on the left.
