You might be seeing excessive losses from the chaffer because you have the air set for a full load of grain and when you are not fully loaded you have enough air to blow grain out the backend. Kinda the nature of the beast, you have to keep is full if that is what is adjusted for. This was explained in the recent Successful Farming article on setting and operating combines.
