I don't know where your grease could of went. It must of vented out by the loose fitting shields. I apply lots of grease to friction surfaces when assembling. Daily greasing with about ten shots should be good. Cycle the varible thru a full range daily. The cams these days are machined at the friction areas and work very well. We polish cams to a very smooth surface if we don't replace them. We drill and install three zirks in plate where they would line up with center of all three cam wear surfaces. Good idea on the cam cover but with the extra zirks you may find no need to be taking a look in there. In fact we don't find ourselves looking in there very much anymore after we got the straw to flow threw nicely, not to mention cylinder belt sales have went down to nill. I have often though of adding the extra washers and bearing to bring spring back to required length. I would think the extra washers and bearing would be good as long as the spring doesn't become fully compressed at full cylinder speed. Good luck.
